FORT MYERS, Fla. β€” People come from all over the world to see these graceful animals. Florida officials are working to save the manatees after a deadly year.

β€œI think they’re another one of God’s beautiful creations,” said Jason Taylor, who was visiting Manatee Park in Fort Myers.

More than a thousand manatees died this year, more than in any year previously.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute wants $7 million from next year’s state budget to care for the manatees and prevent as many deaths as possible.

Nearly $800,000 would go to manatee rescue and management. Another $2.9 million would expand manatee care resources, and another $3 million would restore manatee habitats, including planting more seagrass as a key food source for manatees.

It could take a decade for the seagrass levels to fully recover. Advocates say that work has to start as soon as possible.
