We’ve mentioned, in previous columns, businesses that came and went, such as retail stores and airlines. But Florida is about tourism, and many an entrepreneur has tried an attraction that seemed like a sure thing. We told you in May 2019 about Cypress Gardens, which thrived for decades until it could not keep up with nearby Disney World. Here are a few attractions that did not last nearly as long:

Six Gun Territory was a park made to look like a Western town, but better funded and more cohesive than Floridaland. It was open from 1963 to 1984.

Six-Gun Territory: The Wild West attraction opened back in 1963 in Ocala, a short distance from the venerable Silver Springs. It was a time when television airwaves and movie screens were full of westerns. The place featured gunfights, can-can dancers, an Indian village and a Mexican village, carnival rides and an overhead β€œsky ride.” Its 40 buildings included a courthouse, saloons, a hotel, a schoolhouse and even a working church. “Bandits” would ambush its train ride, and lawmen would gun down bank robbers they caught in the act.
